The Helpful Version (Because It Exists Too)
It would be dishonest to paint this as purely dystopian. Establish a behavioral baseline, monitor for sustained deviations, flag them for clinical review.
Some systems are already in limited deployment. Certain wearable devices now include mental health monitoring features that track heart rate variability, sleep disruption, and activity changes as proxy indicators. Depression is consistently under-diagnosed, in large part because people do not recognize their own symptoms until they are deep in an episode. A system that catches the behavioral shift early could save lives.
But the ethical framework does not exist yet. Who owns the mood data? Can it be subpoenaed? Can it affect your insurance rates? Your custody case? The technology is years ahead of the policy, which is the most predictable sentence in the history of technology writing, and also the most consistently true.
Learning to Live With the Emotional Panopticon
There is no clean answer to "should algorithms detect our emotions?" because they already do. That ship has circumnavigated the globe and come back with a detailed map of your psyche.
The real questions are about governance, transparency, and choice. Who decides how mood-detection capabilities are used? Do people have the right to know when their emotional state is being inferred? Can you opt out without losing the benefits? If the algorithm that notices your depression is the same one that recommends your music, turning off one means turning off the other. That is not a choice. That is a hostage negotiation.

And talk to actual humans about how you are feeling. Not because technology is bad and people are good. But because a conversation with someone who genuinely cares about you involves a form of recognition that no algorithm can replicate. Being known is different from being modeled. Being seen is different from being predicted.
